BNP men lock horns with police in Dhaka, again

Overzealous BNP activists locked into a series of chase and counter-chases with law enforcement personnel on the street in front of the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka on Thursday. On December 5, a similar incident resulted in the vandalizing of more than 100 vehicles in the area. The clash had ensued right after a motorcade carried BNP party chief Khaleda Zia to a court in the Bakshibazar area. The BNP chairperson appeared before a special court in a graft case on the day. Maruf Hossain, deputy commissioner (Ramna zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: “Police tried to dissuade them as they were breaking through barricades.” The BNP activists also hurled brickbats at law enforcers, leaving some of them injured, he claimed.

Home minister warns against anarchy over Khaleda verdict

Home Minster Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday said members of law enforcement agencies have been kept on alert to resist any possible anarchy in the country over the verdict in the graft cases against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, reports our Pabna correspondent Emroz Khandakar. "No one is above law and the judiciary is independent. The offenders will be brought to justice, no matter who they are," he said while addressing a program after inaugurating the new building of Hundial police investigation centre in Chatmohar upazila of the district.
