Activists and leaders of the BNP and its allies allegedly vandalized over 100 vehicles in front of the Secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Police arrested at least 15 people following the incident, which took place at around 2:45pm as the activists were returning from a makeshift court in Bakshibazar where BNP chief Khaleda Zia had appeared to seek bail in two graft cases.
According to witnesses, BNP leaders and activists began demonstrating as the BNP chairperson crossed the Doel Chattar area.
Police intervened when the BNP activists reached the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), widely known as “Shikkha Bhaban”, en route to the Secretariat.
Police and BNP men chased each other intermittently for half an hour, with the activists splitting into two groups at one stage.
One group rushed towards the Secretariat and vandalized both privately and government-owned vehicles, while the other group torched a police sergeant's motorcycle parked in front of government officers' hospital in Banga Bazar.
The BNP chairperson’s press wing official, Shyrul Kabir Khan, said police arrested at least 15 to 20 of their men from different points of the area.
Among those injured in the scuffle was Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal General Secretary Abdul Quader Bhuiyan Jewel.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain said at least three police members were also injured during the clashes.
