Khaleda’s lawyers brawl over appearing in front of TV camera

Update : 20 Oct 2017, 12:45 AM
A fight broke out between pro-BNP lawyers  at Bakshibazar court premises on Thursday after people stood in front of TV cameras at the start of a media briefing about the cases against party leader Khaleda Zia. The incident started after the BNP chief was granted bail in two graft cases at the makeshift special court in Dhaka. Dhaka Bar Association President Md Khorshed Alam Mia, who was standing along with other senior BNP-backed lawyers for the briefing, asked a junior lawyer, Mirza Mahmud, to step aside, at around 1:30pm on Thursday. Mahmud, however, reacted upon being asked to do so and started verbally abusing Khorshed, also a counsel for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Mahmud did not just stop there and started a heated altercation with the senior lawyer instead, said the onlookers. “At one stage, Mahmud got into scuffle with Khorshed, which angered the other lawyers, prompting them to swoop on Mahmud,” said one lawyer, requesting anonymity. In the meantime, some other lawyers came forward to save Mahmud, ensuing a chase and counter chase with Khorshed’s followers on the court premises, added the lawyer, who claimed to have hit Mahmud with his bare hands. Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Sanaullah Mia, two lawyers for Khaleda, among others, were present during the incident. Afterwards, the duo with the help of other BNP-minded lawyers brought the situation under control. Earlier in the day, Judge Dr Akhtaruzzaman of Dhaka Special Judges Court 5 passed the bail orders, in response to petitions filed by Khaleda’s lawyers. The court granted bail to Khaleda upon a bond of Tk1 lakh each.
