Bangladesh would require an additional amount of $928.48 billion during the period from 2017 to 2030 for full implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country, revealed a new study.
The report titled “SDGs Financing Strategy: Bangladesh Perspective” estimated that the additional amount would be 19.75% of the accumulated GDP under the seventh extended scenario.
The annual average cost of SDGs will be $66.32 billion during this period, said the report prepared and published by General Economics Division (GED) of Bangladesh Planning Commission.
The report along with two others – Bangladesh Voluntary National Review (VNR) 2017 on SDGs and A Training Handbook on implementation of the 7th Five Year Plan – was launched at a programme jointly organised by the GED, Planning Commission and Engaging with Institutions (EI), IP Project, and UNDP Bangladesh at National Economic Council (NEC) Conference Room in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Banglanagar yesterday.
Prime Minister’s Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam was present as the chief guest at the programme with Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal presiding over the programme.
Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Kazi Aminul Islam, Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Kazi Shafiqul Azam, Finance Division Secretary Md Muslim Chowdhury and UNDP Bangladesh’s Country Director Sudipto Mukerjee were present at the programme as special guests.
At the programme, Planning Commission Senior Secretary Dr Shamsul Alam made a presentation on the findings of the reports and government efforts in the implementation of SDGs in Bangladesh.
While speaking at the programme, HT Imam said: “Training is an input for development and the government officers and employees need proper training in order to make project plans, implement and monitor them effectively in line with the SDGs.”
Listing the preparatory works for implementation of SDGs in Bangladesh, the planning minister said: “Taking a whole-of-society approach, we have already integrated the SDGs in our 7th Five Year Plan, mapped the ministries by targets, conducted a data gap analysis and SDG financing strategy and prepared a national plan to achieve the global goals.”
He said: “Bangladesh is moving forward and showing healthy sign of progress in economic and social fields including that of SDGs.”
Terming Bangladesh an “example of best practice in mainstreaming SDGs into national plan with an effective SDGs Implementation Plan,” UNDP Bangladesh Country Director Sudipto Mukerjee expressed continued support of his organisation to timely achieve the SDGs in the country.
