Shibir cadre, 12 others acquitted in JCD leader murder

After 20 years of the killing of the then Chittagong Polytechnic Institute’s Student Union General Secretary Jamir Uddin, a Chittagong court has acquitted Shibir cadre Nasir Uddin and 12 others of the murder.

Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Reza Tarique Ahmed passed the order at around 2pm on Wednesday.

The court acquitted 13 accused out of 15 while the two others –  Humayun Kabir and Kuddus – died, said tribunal’s Prosecutor Advocate Md Ayub Khan.

The acquitted are Shibir cadre Nasir, Kazi Osman Gani, Harun-or-Rashid, Delwar Hossain, Sahabuddin, Shawkat Hossain, Nurul Islam, Ibrahim, Anwar Hossain, Moksed Alam, Abdul Mannan, Ahsanul Azad and Abdul Kuddus, he said.

The prosecutor said the court acquitted them as the charges against the accused were not proved.

Miscreants killed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Chittagong Polytechnic Institute unit’s President Jamir, also the general secretary of the institute’s student union, at the institute’s ground floor at around 11:30am on November 20, 1994.

On that day, Shibir attacked the institute when the classes were continuing to take the control of the campus politics into their grip. During the attack, some armed miscreants shot Jamir and the campus JCD Convener Jahangir Farid to death.

Over the incident, Jamir’s elder brother Aziz Uddin lodged a case with Panchlaish police station on that day.

Police in their investigation found the names of 15 persons including the notorious Shibir cadre Nasir in connection with the incident.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Panchlaish circle) ATM Jasim Uddin, investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet of the case against the 15 persons on February 2, 1995.

The court framed the charges against the 15 men on August 23, 2000 but the trial proceeding of the case was halted by the order of the High Court on April 15, 2004. The trial was resumed on August 26, 2014.

The court announced the verdict after testifying nine prosecution witnesses out of 21 while four witnesses died and four others are in abroad.
