ASI returns extortion money, apologises to tortured DU student

Update : 04 Nov 2016, 07:21 PM
Surprisingly, the handover took place in presence of Jhenaidah-4 MP and Kaliganj upazila unit Awami League General Secretary, Anwarul Azim Anar, on Thursday night. The victim's father, Mirazul Islam, confirmed the exchange to the Dhaka Tribune. “When the news of my son's torture was published in different media, ASI Touhidur Rahman started asking us to resolve the matter," Mirazul said. “He finally apologised to my son for the torture and returned the money he took from us to release my son. Local MP Anwarul Azim Anar was present there.” In the dead of night on October 28, a patrol team led by ASI Touhidur picked up 23-year-old Jahangir without charge from his in-law’s house in Paikpara village in Jhenaidah upazila. He was blindfolded in lock-up and tortured with bamboo fetters and had the sole of his feet thrashed with canes. ASI Touhidur hit his knees and other joints as well during the torture. Later, Jahangir's family managed his release after paying a large bribe to the ASI. Lawmaker Anwarul said police had detained Jahangir to get information about a kidnapped girl. "He was beaten up a little bit in the custody. Later the girl was rescued and I have resolved the matter.” Khorshedpur circle ASP Ali Azam Khan said he was unaware of the incident and the development thus far, but told our correspondent in Jhenaidah he would "take necessary actions after looking into the matter." Jahangir, a student at the social welfare department in DU, is  being treated at a local hospital.
