The mastermind behind the murder of Rajshahi University Professor Shafiul Islam has been detained, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has claimed.
Additional Director General (operations) of the elite force Colonel Ziaul Ahsan told the Dhaka Tribune six persons, including “the mastermind”, were detained in nightlong drives in Dhaka and Rajshahi.
The detainees are “mastermind” Ariful Islam Manik, Organising Secretary of Katakhali municipality unit of Jubo Dal, Pintu, member of the Jubo Dal unit, local criminals Tokai Babu, Mamun, Kalu and Sabuj.
Details regarding the drive would be disclosed in a press conference at 3:30pm at the RAB headquarter, Colonel Ziaul said.
On November 16, police detained a local college principal along with 19 others over the killing.
Later, Rajshahi police showed 11 people arrested in the murder case filed in connection with the killing on November 17.
Professor Shafiul Islam was hacked to death outside his house in the Chauddapai area of Rajshahi city on November 15. He died several hours later while undergoing treatment for his wounds.
A Facebook page, apparently representing an unknown militant group, has claimed responsibility for the murder.
