The failure to interrogate those accused in the Narayanganj seven murder case means the high powered probe body will probably not submit its final report to the High Court before December.
Five of the six accused in the first information report are on the run. The other is in custody in India but cannot be extradited under Indian law until cases pending against him there are settled.
The probe body is preparing a draft report based on information gathered from questioning around 400 people.
Investigators will question two more RAB personnel, Lance Nayek Belal Hossain, who tried to commit suicide and is in hospital in police custody, and Lance Corporal Ruhul Amin, who is currently in remand.
Probe body chief Shahjahan Ali Mollah, an additional secretary in the Public Administration Ministry, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The body wants to interrogate the six FIR accused. It is necessary for preparing a complete report. We are waiting to see if the government can successfully bring back Nur Hossain, the prime accused,” he said.
Government efforts to have him brought back may not be successful now.
Nur Hossain, former councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation and the prime accused, was arrested in Kolkata.
The other FIR accused suspects Yasin Ali, Hasmat Ali, Aminul Islam Raju, Iqbal Hossain and Anwar Hossain remain fugitives.
Shahjahan said they were close to concluding inquiry but taking time for preparing a complete report to the High Court.
“Although we requested the HC on to allow us four more weeks, the court is yet to give an order. We are waiting to know the date,” he said.
On April 27 Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, three aides and a driver, and senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and his driver were kidnapped. Over the next few days, their bodies were found in the Shitalakkhya River.
