Police say Uttara sibling deaths probably suicide

Update : 17 Sep 2014, 09:15 PM

Police say preliminary investigations into the deaths of a brother and sister in the capital's Uttara neighbourhood suggest they died by hanging, indicating that the siblings committed suicide.

The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Harun-ur-Rashid of Uttara West police station, said: “The signs indicate that they committed suicide. We have not found any marks on the victim's bodies that suggest that they were first killed and then hanged from the ceiling in order to disguise murder.”

The two teenaged siblings hung themselves from the ceiling of their separate rooms in the capital's Uttara area on Monday. The deceased are Chirosree Zaman Munmun, 18, and her younger brother Mohammad Alimuzzaman, 15. They lived on the 5th floor a building at Gharib-e-Newaz avenue in Uttara sector 13. The bodies were recovered around 12am on Monday.

The investigating officer said: “We have interrogated many people. On that day, no one came to visit the house. Munmun left the house around 12pm to buy cigarettes.”

Their mother, Joyshree Zaman, has been working at Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) since 2009. She spoke on the phone with her children around 9:30pm on the night they took their own lives. At around 11:30pm, after returning home, she discovered their bodies hanging from the ceiling in two separate rooms that were locked from the inside.

The police say that frustration and despair over their parents' separation might have been the reason for the double suicide.

“The children were addicted to drugs. We found marijuana in Alim’s bag. They committed suicide due to depression,” SI Harun said. The post-mortem report will provide more details, police said.

As yet, none of their father's family members have contacted the police.
