Custom officials at Shah Amanat International Airport have recovered 240 gold bars worth Tk12 crore from a plane of Regent Airways.
The plane arrived at the airport from Singapore around 6pm. However, none was arrested in this connection.
Moshiur Rahman Mondal, assistant commissioner of Customs at the airport told the Dhaka Tribune that they found the bars, which were wrapped with black polythene and kept in abandoned condition, after searching the toilet of the plane at around 6:45pm.
The gold bars weighing 28 kilogrammes were handed over to Bangladesh Bank while a case was lodged with Patenga police station in this connection, added the assistant commissioner.
Existing law allows a person to carry highest 200 grams of gold from abroad paying necessary duty at the airport while the passenger can bring highest two kilogrammes of gold by giving early notice to the authorities concerned and paying duty, according to a circular of Bangladesh Bank.
