A pregnant woman was tied to a tree and tortured in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari for refusing to withdraw a five-year-old murder case filed against 16 people.
Shefali Begum claims she was brutally tortured in her home village of Baishpukur on Saturday despite being seven months into her pregnancy.
“They threatened me with dire consequences unless I withdrew the case,” she said. “They wanted me to attend a local arbitration but I refused.”
Some local Awami League leaders called up Shefali to hear details about the issue.
Surprisingly, the ruling party leaders and their followers accused the 32-year-old wife of Lalon Mian of cow theft, and started beating her.
“I was tortured until police rescued me,” she said.
On August 3, Shefali’s younger sister, Aklima, who lives in the same village, was also reportedly tortured by her husband, Rafiqul Islam.
Shefali was also assaulted by the family members of Rafiqul as she protested against the attack on her sister.
Nilphamari district police chief ABM Atiqur Rahman has ordered the officer-in-charge of Dimla police station to take proper steps in this connection.
Shefali’s maternal uncle, Shahidul Islam, filed a case at Dimla police station on Sunday night, accusing 19 named and up to five unnamed people of beating his niece.
