The government has cancelled the licences of four recruiting agencies and confiscated their deposits for defrauding migrant workers.
The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment cancelled the licences on July 23. The agencies are: Meghna Trade International, Morning Sun Enterprise, East Bengal Overseas and Idea International Limited.
The ministry asked the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training to distribute the money among victims.
Morning Sun Enterprise sent 11 migrants to Iraq to work in M Kodia Co General Trading. After reaching Iraq, they did not get a job and were confined for about eight months.
After returning home, four of those workers brought allegations against Morning Sun Enterprise, which were proven to be true in ministry investigations.
Meghna Trade International sent 13 workers to Iraq, but they too did not get a job and were confined for eight months.
Three returning migrants made allegations against the agency, which subsequent ministry investigations upheld to be true.
“We have ordered BMET to distribute the deposit money of Meghna Trade and Morning Sun among the victims,” said Md Nurul Islam, joint secretary at the ministry, to the Dhaka Tribune at his office yesterday.
He said the victims were entitled to file criminal cases against the agency owners.
