Update : 17 Jun 2016, 12:41 AM
A Chittagong court on Thursday granted bail to ruling Awami League lawmaker Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury after he surrendered in a case filed for assaulting an election officer. Banshkhali Senior Judicial Magistrate Sazzad Hossain issued the bail after the accused surrendered before the court. Two other accused in the case – Tajul Islam, Awami League nominated chairman candidate from Baharchhara union under Banshkhali upazila and also the upazila Juba League president, and Akhter Hossain, Banshkhali chapter president of Ulama League – also received bail. On June 1, the High Court ordered Mustafizur Rahman MP to surrender before the trial court by June 20. The bench of Justice Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Alamgir Hossain passed the order rejecting the lawmaker’s anticipatory bail plea. MP Mustafizur Rahman and his followers allegedly assaulted Banshkhali Election Officer Jahedul Islam on June 1 when the officer did not comply with the lawmaker’s demands. It is alleged that the Banshkhali MP gave a list of his chosen presiding and polling officers to Jahedul for their appointment in the final phase of UP elections which was scheduled on June 4. But following the allegation of assaulting the polls officer, the Election Commission postponed elections to all union parishads under Banshkhali upazila. On June 3, Banshkhali Election Officer Jahedul Islam filed a case against three persons including Banshkhali MP Mustafizur Rahman for assaulting him.
