Police have submitted charge sheets against poet Shahabuddin Nagari and Nurani Akter Sumi in connection to the murder of Nurani Akter Sumi’s husband, businessman Nurul Islam on Sunday.
Sumi is currently in jail while poet Shahabuddin Nagari has been out on bail.
The investigation officer of the case, Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police Md Robiul Islam, submitted the charge sheets to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court.
Sub Inspector Asadul Islam, the general recording officer (GRO) of the CMM court, told Dhaka Tribune that the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sheikh Hafizur Rahman will send the case dockets to the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court for disposal of the case.
“27 people have been mentioned in the charge sheets as prosecution witnesses including the complainant in the case,” he added.
Shahabuddin Nagari was arrested from Nikunja, while the other two arrestees including Nurul’s wife, Nurani Akter Sumi, and his driver, Md Salim Hossain, were detained from the New Market police station area on April 17.
Inspector Robiul also appealed to the court to discharge Nurul’s driver Salim from the case as the charges against him were unsubstantiated during the primary investigation in the case.
Police recovered the body of Nurul Islam from his flat in Dom Inno Apartment Complex at Elephant Road in Dhaka on April 13 and later sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem.
The deceased's sister Shahana Rahman Kajol filed a murder case with New Market police station against the victim's wife, her friend Nagari, and a couple of other unidentified people the next day.
