Forensic experts have found that severe head injuries resulted in the death of jhut (garment waste) trader Mahbubur Rahman alias Sujon in Mirpur police custody on Sunday, said unconfirmed sources Monday.
They also found injuries on his hands, legs and other parts of his body, sources told the Dhaka Tribune after an autopsy was carried out on the trader's body around 12:30pm.
Professor Habibuzzaman Chowdhury, who heads the Forensic Department at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), along with Assistant Professor AKM Shafiuzzaman conducted the autopsy on the body.
Forensic Department chief Habib refused to make any comment on the findings and said: “The report will be submitted tomorrow [today].”
The body was taken to the home of the deceased's mother in Mirpur's Shah Ali area around 3pm, as several hundred people began to protest.
The protesters demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of the policemen who were responsible for Sujon's death. The body was buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard.
Md Shahim, the victim's brother, said they had gone to the Mirpur police station to file a murder case against SI Zahidur and his associates, but police had refused to record it.
He also said they would go to the court to file a murder case against the policemen.
Earlier, on Sunday, some Mirpur policemen, including Sub-Inspector Zahidur Rahman, allegedly tortured Sujon to death for refusing to pay their extortion demand of Tk1 lakh every month.
Zahidur was immediately suspended to the Rajarbagh Police Lines and a three-member probe committee also formed to investigate the incident.
