No headway in student killing probe

Update : 07 Feb 2014, 08:32 PM

Police are yet to make any significant progress in the investigation into the killing of a Chittagong University student at the university’s Shah Amanat Hall, even after 26 days since the killing.

Mamun Hossain, a fourth year student of the Soil Science Department, was killed on January 12 during a fierce clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party, and Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Islamist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami. The clash also left 25 others injured.

Campus sources said though activists of the both groups involved in the clash, were roaming free on the campus, police had yet to trace them.

Following the incident, Shah Amanat Hall Provost Prof Mohammed Abul Mansur filed a case with Hathazari police station accusing unidentified people.

On the other hand, slain Mamun’s father, Mowlana Muhammad Rafi Uddin, filed another case with the CMM court, accusing 34 named and more than 150 unnamed Chhatra League leaders and activists, as police allegedly refused to lodge the case.

While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, CU unit Chhatra Shibir President Mostafizur Rahman alleged: “Police refused to file the case as Mamun’s father mentioned the names of Alamgir Tipu and Diaz Irfan Chowdhury, organising secretary and joint secretary of the CU unit Chhatra League respectively, as the prime accused.”

Sub-Inspector Sentu Mia of Hathazari police station brushed aside the allegation, saying that one case was already filed and police had attached a copy of the deceased’s father’s allegation with it.

Nurul Hakim, investigating officer in the case, said police had already started the investigation, adding that, as the accused were unnamed, it was troublesome to find the real culprits.

Following the clash, CU authorities, in an emergency meeting, formed a probe committee consisting of three members, and headed by Prof Mohiuddin of the Forestry and Environmental Science Institute.

“The probe committee has already taken statements from eyewitnesses, injured students and hall staff who witnessed the clash,” said Mohammed Ohidul Alam, a member of the probe committee.
