A Dhaka court yesterday recorded the confessional statement of Constable Shawkat Ali for his alleged involvement in the murder of a village quack at Rajarbagh Police Lines barrack in the capital.
Metropolitan Magistrate Shariar Mahmud Adnan recorded the statement as Tofael Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Paltan police station produced Shawkat in the court and filed a petition for recording his statement.
The court later sent the accused to jail after completion of his three days’ remand.
In January, the CMM court’s magistrate granted three days’ remand for interrogation.
Police detained Shawkat from the Rajarbagh Police Lines barrack on January 22, following information received from the family members of the victim.
The police had recovered the victim’s beheaded body from the roof of a five-storey house at Rajarbagh traffic police barracks the previous day. They recovered the decapitated head from a pond at the police lines on January 22.
A relative identified the body of Nannu Munshi, a quack from Bakkhana village in Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore.
Police sources said Shawkat had a family feud with his wife for a long time.
Nannu, who used to practise herbal treatment, took a total of Tk 1.70 lakh from Shawkat at different times by giving him assurance of resolving his family feud.
On January 20, Nannu came to Shawkat and demanded more money at which point they started fighting on the rooftop of the traffic police barrack.
At one stage, Shawkat killed Nannu on the rooftop of the building.
