Police detained a youth on Tuesday night for allegedly hanging a garland of shoes around the unfinished sculpture of Bir Shreshtha Hamidur Rahman in Jhenaidah town.
The detained youth was identified as Abdur Rahman alias Samrat, son of deceased Shahadat Hossain, a resident of Kanchannagar area in the district municipal town. Police said CCTV footage helped identify him.
He was detained from his home in Kanchannagar around 8:30pm on Tuesday.
Samrat previously worked as a cook at a local restaurant and later at Johan Park. He had recently been staying at home and occasionally sold jhalmuri from a van in the town.
His wife Asma Khatun said she knew nothing about the incident. She said police came to their home on Tuesday evening and took her husband away.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Billal Hossain said police launched a drive to identify and detain those involved after the incident. Samrat was later detained from Kanchannagar after being identified through CCTV footage.
He will be produced before a court, the police official said.
