Police have detained a teenager in connection with the recovery of the body of Ishayat Shahriar alias Apratim, 13, son of Comilla University teacher Nahida Begum.
The teenager was detained from the Kotbari area on Saturday afternoon after Apratim’s body was recovered, Comilla Superintendent of Police Anisuzzaman confirmed the matter.
After visiting the scene, the SP said the incident was “extremely heartbreaking” as Apratim’s mother is a teacher at Comilla University.
“Several teams are working on the case, and we have found some clues. We have a person in custody,” he said.
Police will conduct intensive questioning to determine who was involved in the killing and establish the motive, Anisuzzaman said.
“We will thoroughly investigate whether the child was killed simply over an iPhone or whether something else was involved,” he added.
Apratim went missing around 3:00pm on Friday after leaving home with his mother’s mobile phone to take photographs.
After he went missing, family members, Comilla University teachers and students, and police searched various locations for him.
His body was recovered around 21 hours later on Saturday afternoon. Police have detained a suspect in connection with the incident.
