A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent two Indian nationals to jail in a case over the seizure of a large quantity of kush, foreign liquor and Indian sarees at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the case’s investigation officer, according to court sources.
The accused are Sanawar Ali, 36, and Imtiaz Ahmed, 36, from Kamarhati in West Bengal, India.
Inspector Shahriya Sharmin of the Department of Narcotics Control, also the investigating officer, produced them before the court and sought their detention in jail.
In her petition, she said the accused, being Indian nationals, could flee the country if granted bail, potentially hampering the investigation and trial. She therefore sought their detention in the interest of a fair investigation.
The court accepted the plea and ordered them to be sent to jail.
The two were arrested on August 24 in the Green Channel area of the airport’s arrival hall.
Officials recovered 5.04kg of kush, three litres of liquor and 24 Indian sarees from their possession.
They also seized Indian passports, US$400, Thai baht and Indian rupees, four mobile phones and two boarding passes.
A case was filed with Airport Police Station under Sections 36(1), 14(b) of the Schedule and 24(a) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.
