Update : 29 Aug 2016, 09:51 AM
Seven policemen have been injured in a gunfight with illegal firearms traders in Sylhet along the Indian border. The skirmish took place at Sangrampunji area on Monday morning, said Goainghat police station Officer-in-Charge Delowar Hossain, who was also injured in the gunfight. Police claim the arms traders were Indians. Suspected firearms trader Scaling Tariang, 32, resident of Sangrampunji Khasia locality, has been arrested with four firearms from the area after the skirmish. OC Delowar claimed Scaling headed the illegal arms trade in the area. He told the Dhaka Tribune that they had been receiving reports of Indian arms traders visiting the bordering village for some time. On Sunday night they were tipped off that several Indian Khasia arms traders were at the village. “We raided the area at around 3:30am,” the OC said. “The militants opened fire as soon as we approached and managed to flee.” Seven policemen, including the OC, were injured. None of them suffered serious injuries.
