Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday night visited the home of the seven-year-old girl brutally killed in a rape and murder incident in capital’s Pallabi.
He arrived at the family’s residence in Block B of Section 11 in Mirpur at around 9:45pm, shortly after a cabinet meeting. During the visit, he met the grieving parents, spoke with them, and offered his condolences to the bereaved family.
According to police, the victim child's body was recovered on Tuesday morning from beneath a bed inside a neighbour’s flat. Her severed head was later found in a bathroom. A murder case was subsequently filed at Pallabi Police Station.
Law enforcement officials first detained the wife of the prime accused, identified as Swapna Akter. Later, the main suspect, Sohel Rana, was arrested in connection with the case. He was subsequently produced before a court, where he reportedly gave a confessional statement admitting to the rape and killing of the child.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage across Bangladesh, with human chains, protest rallies and demonstrations held in Dhaka and several districts, demanding swift justice and the maximum punishment for those involved.
