Unidentified criminals strangled a security guard to death and stole Tk7.2m from Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited’s (IBBL) Kaliganj branch in Jhenaidah. The incident took place at some time during Thursday night or the early hours of Friday.
The deceased was Ayub Hossain, 50, hailing from Rajarhat Kachua village under Jessore sadar upazila.
Mahmud Hasan, manager of IBBL’s Kaliganj branch, said the guard had been on duty from Thursday evening and the miscreants may have committed the murder and the robbery of Tk7.2m at any time during Thursday night or the early hours of Friday.
The manager said another security guard found the bank’s main gate locked on Friday and notified authorities after failing to get any response from Ayub.
Later, Ayub’s body was recovered after the lock was broken in the presence of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Eradul Haque and Liakat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj police station.
The OC informed that there were signs of injury on Ayub’s forehead, adding that culprits may have taken advantage of the long holiday to commit the murder.
The body was sent to Jhenaidah sadar hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, the OC said.
