A man was shot dead by unidentified miscreants at the New Market area in the capital on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 8:00 pm in front of Shahnewaz Hall at University of Dhaka, located behind the New Market area.
The identity of the victim, believed to be approximately 50 years old, could not be immediately confirmed.
Sub-Inspector Shahadat of Newmarket Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at close range. The victim was reportedly shot five to six times in different parts of his body, including the head, before the assailants fled the scene.
Local residents rescued the critically injured man and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead at 8:27 pm.
The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for identification. Law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to determine the identity of the deceased and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
