National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH) Deputy Director Dr Ahmed Hossain was stabbed by unidentified youths in the capital’s Mohakhali area on Monday afternoon.
The attack took place in a lane near a water tank adjacent to BRAC University, under Banani Police Station, while he was returning home on foot after finishing office at the cancer hospital.
He was first taken to the NICRH for primary treatment and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9pm, where he is now undergoing treatment in a VIP cabin.
Resident physician of DMCH’s emergency department, Dr Mostak Ahamed, said Hossain sustained stab wounds on his hand, left arm and back. “He has been admitted and is out of danger,” he said.
The injured official said two youths intercepted him on the way, stabbed him and fled the scene.
A friend of Hossain wishing to be anonymous claimed that about two weeks ago a man named Rubel had threatened him over arranging a tender through the electronic government procurement (e-GP) system. Hossain had informed his superiors about the matter, the friend added. However, when asked about the threat, Hossain said many people used to call him seeking tenders, but avoided commenting directly on the allegation.
He joined the cancer hospital around two months ago. Previously, he served as director of the discipline committee at the Directorate General of Health Services.
