A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a five-day remand for former Director General (DG) of the Directorate General of Defence Intelligence (DGFI) Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled in connection with a murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddique Azad passed the order after reviewing a remand application submitted by the investigating officer and Sub-Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan police Kafil Uddin.

State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.

According to the remand petition, on the afternoon of July 19, 2024, a group of approximately 500 to 700 Awami League leaders and activists allegedly carried out an attack on students and civilians during a peaceful demonstration in the Falpatti area of Mirpur-10. The attack reportedly involved the use of firearms and locally made weapons.

The petition further alleges that Sheikh Mamun Khaled ordered the assault.

One of the victims, Delwar Hossain, who sustained serious gunshot injuries during the incident, died on July 21 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shyamoli.

Investigators stated in the petition that custodial interrogation of the accused is necessary to determine the full circumstances surrounding the murder, identify and apprehend other suspects, gather information about unidentified individuals involved, and recover the weapons used in the attack.

Earlier, DB police arrested Sheikh Mamun Khaled from a flat in the capital’s DOHS area at around 12:30 am on Wednesday.
