Police claimed Thursday to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a security guard in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Sunday.
Enamul Huq, 21, was stabbed to death while on duty outside the Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited ATM booth on Nur Jahan Road, in what initially appeared to be a motiveless attack. No cash was stolen from the machine but police now believe Enamul was killed on orders following a feud.
Four people are now in custody including a 40-year-old “sex worker” named Meghla, the suspected mastermind behind the murder. The other three arrestees are Sunny, Parvej and Jewel all identified by only their first names.
“Meghla was a sex worker and had an illicit relationship with Enamul. She assigned the three youths to kill him following a feud with the latter,” said Azizul Huq, the officer in charge of Mohammadpur police station.
“They stabbed him to death on her instructions near the very ATM booth he worked in,” Azizul said, adding they had arrested the four during an overnight drive in Mohammadpur.
According to police, Enamul was an employee of private security provider Elite Security and son of Abdul Rashid of Bhauail village of Tarail upazila under Kishoreganj district. He had been residing in a slum in the neighbourhood.
Police said the three youths were professional muggers and had been arrested several times before and had various criminal charges against them.
Inspector Abdul Matin of the Mohammadpur police station said they first arrested Meghla after identifying her from CCTV video footage taken from the booth. They arrested the others following information given by her.
“On that night, Meghla first called out Enamul from the booth and later Sunny, Parvej and Jewel strangulated and stabbed him to death at a nearby place,” he said.
