Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Shafiqul Alam on Wednesday said the government is investigating the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi with the “highest priority,” with all relevant security agencies engaged in the probe.

Responding to questions from journalists at a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, he said police and other law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the case.

“Everyone is working on it. There have already been some arrests—though not of the main suspect—and many people who were around him have been detained. We are getting some vital clues. The investigation is receiving the highest level of support,” Shafiqul Alam said.

He added that the government is taking the matter seriously and that the Ministry of Law has said the case will be tried under a speedy trial tribunal.

Asked about security arrangements for BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman upon his return to Bangladesh, the press secretary said the government welcomes his return and is in discussions with the party regarding necessary security measures.

“The party has discussed its security needs with us. We are providing whatever cooperation they are asking for from the government,” he said.

Regarding a reported letter from the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, Shafiqul Alam said he was not aware of it.

“At least, I have not seen such a letter,” he said, adding that the government’s position on the Awami League is clear.

“The activities of the Awami League have been suspended and the Election Commission has cancelled the party’s registration. As a result, the Awami League will not be able to participate in the upcoming election,” he said.
