Business rivalry behind Rocky murder: police

Update : 01 Sep 2013, 06:16 PM

Police say Shah Ali alias Rocky, president of ward 92 unit of Jubo League, was killed because of business rivalry.

Police Sunday arrested two people, Mohammad Gias and Monir Hossain, who were accused in a case filed by Rocky’s father.

Pallabi Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Kamal Ahmed said the killing was not for political reasons. “Rocky was killed in a personal feud,” he said.

“Primarily we are also keeping in mind some incidents which triggered a feud among the grassroots leaders of several political parties over holding supremacy in jhut trading,” he said.

Some local goons who belong to major political parties run the jhut (garment scrap) trading in the area together, according to police.

A police official said Rocky used to control the jhut trading in the area. The works and profits were distributed among local political leaders and activists of both Awami League and BNP.

Rocky was stabbed indiscriminately by several men at Mirpur Section 7, near a pharmacy shop called Pallabi Medical Corner, around 11am on Saturday.

Rocky’s father Matiur Rahman filed a case with Pallabi police station naming eight and accusing six unnamed people.

Matiur told the Dhaka Tribune Gias and Monir had attacked Rocky and his father-in-law Dulal Hossain some days back. A local arbitration tried to solve the feud. But after that the criminals became more furious and killed him, he claimed.

He claimed that Gias was involved with Swechchha Sebak League and Monir with Jubo League.

Rocky’s father-in-law Dulal Hossain is the vice president of Jubo League’s ward 92 unit. He could not take any organisational action against Monir because of internal conflict in the unit, said Matiur.

Matiur, police and locals said among those accused in the case, Munna and Chunnu were local BNP activists.

Rocky is the third Jubo League leader killed in Dhaka last month.

On August 21, Mokhter Hossain, a vice president of ward 24 unit, was hacked to death in Malibagh and on July 29 Reazul Huq Khan Milky, an organising secretary of the Dhaka City North unit, was gunned down in Gulshan by another leader of the same organisation.
