CTTC: 3 BNP men arrested over arson attack on Asim Paribahan bus in Demra

  • They torched the bus following an order from top leaders, says CTTC chief 
  • Vehicle used during the incident seized 
  • Arrested after analyzing CCTV footage of the incident spot

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested three people for their alleged involvement in setting fire to a bus of Achim Paribahan in Demra of Dhaka city in October last year, leaving its helper dead and another injured.

At this time, the vehicle used by the accused in this incident of fire has been seized.

The arrested people are Md Nurul Islam Moni alias Monir Munsi, 37, former Vice President of Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra Dal, Md Shahid Ahmed, 38, member secretary of Narayanganj Metropolitan unit Jubo Dal, 33, driver of Monir Munshi.

Additional Commissioner of DMP Md Asaduzzaman, also chief of CTTC, gave this information at a press conference organized at DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Saturday.

He said that on October 28, BNP carried out a violent attack in Paltan area of the capital. They torched several vehicles in the Paltan and adjoining areas.

In continuation of this, miscreants set fire to a car of Asim Paribahan kept at the Deilla bus stand under Demra police station in the early hours of October 29.

The helper Md Naim, 22, who was sleeping on the bus, was burnt to death on the spot.

Another helper Md Rabiul, 25, was seriously injured in the fire.

On October 29, a murder case was filed with Demra police station.

He said that the case was handed over to the Anti-Illegal Arms and Canine Team of the CTTC's Special Action Group on November 11, 2023. The CTTC initiated an investigation into the case.

The CTTC then collected the CCTV footage around the spot. After analyzing these footage, a Harrier vehicle was identified which was used for arson that day.

Following the clue of this vehicle, the main arsonist and his accomplices were arrested and the vehicle used in the incident, after conducting raids in different areas of DMP.

He further said that during the initial interrogation, the accused said that Monir Munshi received instructions from his leaders to continue the sabotage on October 28.

The main target was to increase widespread panic and fear among the public.

In response to a question from journalists, Md Asaduzzaman said that Monir Munshi carried out the arson attack after receiving instruction from top leaders. He wants to make bigger things happen hoping to get a significant post in the party.

When asked whether the instructor had been identified in the incident, he said: "We have received the names in the arson incident. Investigation is going on about them. We will arrest them too. But for the sake of investigation, I will not tell you any information about them now.”

The CTTC official also said that the arrested accused have been sent to the court with bail plea.
