Update : 04 Feb 2024, 11:31 PM

The teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University brought out a torch march demanding punishment for the rape of a woman inside the campus.

The march started from the university's Shaheed Minar around 7:30pm, passed through Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and various student halls, and ended in front of the vice-chancellor's residence on Sunday.

In a brief rally conducted by Mahfuz Islam Megh, a student of the Department of Environmental Sciences, at the end of the march, the speakers announced that the movement will continue until the rapists were punished.

Sohagi Samia, a student of the drama and dramatics department, said: “There has been a reign of terror in this university for a long time. It wasn't built in a day. A fresher has to go through physical and mental torture from the very first day on campus.”

“This led to the creation of people like Mustafiz, who endured these tortures and has become a rapist. The university administration never wants to root out the problem but wants to keep it alive,” she added.

Alif Mahmud, a student of the English department, said: “The movement will continue until the non-students are expelled from the hall. Those who want to shelter rapists will also be given a befitting reply.”

“This is our own fight. Our potential is nipped in the bud because of this common room culture.” said Arif Sohail, a student of the Department International Relations.

Initially, by providing drugs to students in the pretense of luxury, Chhatra league is destroying the futures of students, he added.
