Police recovered the bodies of an inspector of the Special Branch (SB) and his wife from their residence at Chamelibagh in the capital’s Malibagh area on Friday night.
A team from the Paltan police station recovered the bodies of Mahfuzur Rahman, 50, who worked at the political branch of SB and her wife Swapna Rahman, 40, around 7pm from their rented flat at the 2-No Chameli Mansion.
Their blood-stained recently decomposed bodies were found wrapped in a bed sheet lying on the bathroom floor attached with their daughter’s room. The bodies were kept one on another.
Officer-in-Charge at Paltan police station, Golam Sarwar told the Dhaka Tribune that they are suspecting the couple was hacked to death anytime between early Thursday and Friday afternoon. They have two children—one girl and a boy.
Their 17-year-old daughter, Oiyeshee Rahman, who has completed her O’levels from the Oxford International School at Dhanmondi and a 10-year-old househelp named Sumi were found to be missing following the incident while their son Ohi Rahman, 7, a class II student at the Police Lines School was under custody.
Teams of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), and Detective Branch of Police (DB) and SB thronged the scene after receiving news of the incident. CID was collecting evidences from the spot.
SB officials present there said, Mahfuzur last attended office on Wednesday. He went back home around 11pm had stopped contacting with his office since.
An uncle to the children Iftekharul Alam told reporters that Oiyeshee called his phone around 2am on Friday saying her parents have gone to Rajshahi and asked her to go to his residence for staying two or three days. She said that she and her brother were staying at one of her friend “Trisha’s” residence at VIP road’s house number-4.
She asked for her uncle’s residence address as she had never been there. But Iftekhar told her that he was at his village celebrating eid and advised them to stay there.
Iftekhar on Friday morning phoned Oiyeshee’s maternal Uncle Rabiul Alam to take the children to his (Rabiul) residence.
Rabiul said, he attended office at the first half of the day and then with his brother Rayhan Alam went to their brother-in-law’s house around 2pm Friday. But he found the main door locked from outside. Within an hour his nephew, Ohi arrived in front of the house by a CNG-run Auto rickshaw from somewhere.
Meanwhile, a team from SB also appeared there, who said, they were there to know why their colleague had been absent at the office. Later, they called police and with the help of SB personnel the main door’s lock was broken.
Manager of the apartment Jahangir Alam told reporters that he saw Oiyeshee, her little brother and the housemaid go outside around 8am Thursday. He called their mother’s cell phone for permission to let them go outside without a guardian.
A neighbour of the family seeking anonymity said, they heard unusual sounds from the flat early on Thursday.
A DIG of SB Mosarraf Hossain Bhuiya, who came there hearing the incident, told reporters that Ohi said, he and Oiyeshee had stayed Thursday night at a house. But he could not give the address.
The DIG suspected that professional killers might be involved in the murder.
However, a police official seeking anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune that the murder took place in presence of Oiyeshee and Ohi.
