A Dhaka court wednesday deferred the proceedings of a case against 46 opposition leaders, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for allegedly torching a bus in front of the Prime Minister’s office during a hartal on April 29 last year.
The lawyer for Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and 36 other accused, filed a time petition saying they could not appear before the court wednesday because of the hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami. Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid accepted the petition and set the next date for proceedings as September 17.
However, BNP Joint-Secretary General AmanullahAman, International Affairs Secretary Nazim Uddin Alamalong, as well as 10 others, were present before the court.
Sub-Inspector of Tejgaon police station Ismail Mazumder filed a case against the 46 leaders and activists of the 18-party alliance, including BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alomgir, Mirza Abbas, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmed, hours after a vehicle was torched near the Prime Minister’s office on April 29, 2012.
Then on May 10, DB inspector Nurul Amin, the investigation officer for the case, submitted a charge sheet before the Court in the arson case, showing 18 individuals, including the owner and the driver of the torched vehicle, as prosecution witnesses.
The opposition had enforced the nation-wide strike to press their demand to rescue BNP leader M Ilyas Ali and restore the non-party caretaker government.
Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was also given extra time by Metropolitan Magistrate Shariar Mahmud Adnan in three other cases.
