Law and order in Narsingdi has drastically gone down ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr with at least seven murders and five robberies reported in last two weeks, causing panic among the people of the district.
The people of Raipura, Belabo, Shibpur and sadar upazilas claimed that they had become victims to assailants, muggers, extortionists and snatchers, adding that secret killings and robberies were common occurrence in these areas.
At least seven people, including two students, two businessmen, a CNG driver and a physically disabled man, were killed in Narsingdi sadar and Raipura upazilas, along with five robberies that took place within last two weeks.
Police, Medical and local sources said a college student, Prodib Das, 22, was allegedly hacked to death by his friends and lover near Hazipur village in sadar upazila over a love affair related dispute on July 6. An unidentified youth was also hacked to death by unidentified assailants, at Fakirerchar in Raipura upazila of the district at night over a tender related dispute on July 16.
On the same day, a school student was hacked to death by assailants at Towadi village in Narsingdi town at night for protesting anti-social activities.
On the following day, police recovered the dead body of a physically disabled youth named Dalim near Shilmandi village in sadar upazila. Police said hired killers murdered Dalim over land dispute.
A businessman, Sultan was stabbed to death by robbers in the same village, when he tried to prevent a group of robbers from robbing his house.
On July 19, some assailants killed CNG driver near his house, the deceased was Idris Ali of Kabirajpur village in sadar upazila.
On July 7, robbers looted valuables worth Tk3m, including gold and cash from Gopal Saha, Niramoy Saha and Shitol Saha’s houses at the West-Kandapara area of the town. Apart from that, Tk500,000 was looted from two shops at Polash upazila on July 14.
Afsar Uddin, a social worker of Polash, alleged that the robbery victims made reports to law enforcers, but no action has been taken so far.
Some businessmen of Madhabdi area, meanwhile, alleged that law enforcers were rather active in collecting money from the businessmen and industrialists, terming it “baksheesh.”
Alleging that listed criminals were moving around in front of the law enforcers, Shahidullah Bhuiyan, a retired school headmaster in Daspara area, said that field level police were not active to arrest criminals.
Meanwhile, businessman Kamal Hossain of Baburhat said police remained busy in VIP duties and taking part in different iftar programmes.
Police Super of Narsingdi Khandaker Muhid Uddin said he had already issued directives in these regards, adding that criminal activities would have come down appreciably if the lawyers would work for granting bails for the culprits.
