Witnesses said leaders and activists of BNP brought out a protest procession as part of their central programme around 4pm.
Police obstructed the procession when it reached in front of Old Jail of the district and the angry activists of the party threw brickbats at the police.
Sources said police nabbed some BNP men from the spot and brought them to the police station. Later the angry leaders and activists attacked the police station, leaving nine police personnel injured.
A number of opposition men were also injured when police fired rubber bullets to disperse them, said a spot account of the incident.
However, Rajapur Upazila BNP general secretary Advocate Talukder Abul Kalam Azad said they did not attack police station. “Some 50 leaders and activists were injured as police charged baton,” he said.
A sub-inspector of the police station said police held 19 BNP men after the incident.
