The deceased Alamgir Hossain was a son of late Leda Mia of the upazila.
Acting on a tip off, police conducted the drive in Dakshin Raipur village of the upazila around 2am when a gang of alleged robbers led by Alamgir was preparing for a robbery, OC Lokman said.
Sensing the presence of law-enforcers, the gang members had opened fire which forced the police to retaliate. Alamgir sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. The doctors there declared him dead, added the OC.
Other members of the gang managed to flee the scene.
