The deceased Alamgir Hossain was a son of late Leda Mia of the upazila.
Four law enforcers also sustained injuries in the fight, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raipur police station Md Lokman Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune.
The injured are Sub Inspector Faruk Hossain and constables Shafik, Umar and Ohid.
Police recovered a locally-made gun, three bullets and some sharp weapons from the scene.
Acting on a tip off, police conducted the drive in Dakshin Raipur village of the upazila around 2am when a gang of alleged robbers led by Alamgir was preparing for a robbery,
OC Lokman said.
Sensing the presence of law-enforcers, the gang members had opened fire which forced the police to retaliate. Alamgir sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. The doctors there declared him dead, added the OC.
Other members of the gang managed to flee the scene.
According to the OC, Alamgir was a listed criminal, accused in seven robbery cases.
