Update : 29 May 2013, 10:11 AM

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday approved a charge sheet against six people, including former principal of Gaibandha Government College, on charges of illegal admission of 102 students using a release slip.

According to the charge sheet, the accused are, Gaibandha Government College former principal Mohammad Rezaul Karim, former associate professor of economics SM Ashadul Islam, Assistant Professor of English M Abdur Rashid, former associate professor of Bangla M Shahidul Islam, Lecturer of Islamic History and Culture M Mustafizur Rahman, and former lecturer of Mathematics Brindaban Sarker.

The name of M Rahmat Ali Khan, former associate professor of chemistry of the same college was removed from the charge sheet.

The case was filed on September 9, last year with the Gaibandha police station.

ACC sources said, as per the National University’s rules, the college admission committee prepares lists of new students based on their merits, for enrolment against the vacant seats using the release slip.

The rule was not followed in the admission of 102 additional students at the college. The admission committee accepted all the applicants who applied under the release slip system and the principal of the college sent the list of all names to the Dean of National University for registration.

The irregularity came into the spotlight when the National University authority verified the lists for registration and asked for an explanation from the principal of Gaibandha Government College. When the principal failed to provide a satisfactory reply, the National University Dean served a letter to the principal of the college informing that no registrations would go through.

Gaibandha Government College former principal Mohammad Rezaul Karim, in collaboration with the admission committee of the 2010-2011 session, admitted these additional students in accounting, bangla, Islamic history and culture, economics, philosophy, political science, and management department with the release slip and gained financial benefits from these students, ACC sources said.

Since they were involved in the illegal admission of 102 students and sent a letter to National University to provide registration numbers for these students, the accused were proven guilty under the section 109 of Penal Code and Section 5(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.

ACC Assistant Director Abu Hena Ashiqur Rahman is now investigating the case. The charge sheet will be filed under Section 32 of Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004.
