Prity’s family gets Tk2 million as prime minister’s grant

Prity died in a gun attack that targeted Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu on March 24 in Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given a grant of Tk2,000,000 to the family of college student Samia Afnan Prity who was shot dead by miscreants in the capital’s Shahjanpur area on March 24 this year.

Barrister Biplab Barua, prime minister’s special assistant and Awami League office secretary, handed over the cheque to Prity’s father Mohammad Jamal Uddin at the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office.

The grant has been given as a family savings certificate.

Biplab Barua said that 35,000 individuals and institutions were given Tk1,121 crore as assistance from the PM’s relief fund from 2019 to 2022.

A total of Tk140 crore was given in 2019 as assistance, Tk580 crore in 2020, Tk324 in 2021 and Tk75 crore has been given so far in 2022.

Prity and former general secretary of the Awami League’s Motijheel unit Jahidul Islam Tipu was shot dead in the capital’s Shahjahanpur on the night of March 24.

A 22-year-old student of of Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, Prity, died as a stray bullet hit her.

Prity was on her way to a friend’s home from Malibagh.

On April 2, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said that it had identified a rival in the party as the mastermind behind the attack on Tipu and arrested four people in connection with the murder. They were later remanded in a case filed over the killings of the duo.
