Shahinuddin murder: Another accused arrested in Dhaka

Awal was the mastermind of Shahinuddin murder while the other accused executed the murder as per his direction

Another man, accused of being involved in the sensational murder of businessman Shahinuddin, was arrested from Dhaka’s Shahbag area on Friday, police said.

The arrestee, identified as Mohammad Taher, is the 14th accused arrested by police since the killing of the businessman by some miscreants allegedly over a land dispute with former lawmaker MA Awal, in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on May 16.

Taher was held on Thursday after Detective Branch (DB) of police tracked him through digital technology, said Md Saiful Islam, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Mirpur zonal detective branch of police. 

He is one of the listed accused in the murder case, filed with Pallabi police station.

According to the case details, the land dispute between Shahinuddin and Awal started in 2004 over the former lawmaker's Alinagar project.

On May 16, the accused called Shahinuddin on his phone and asked him to come to Mirpur 12 under the pretext of resolving a land dispute.

When Shahinuddin reached the area around 4pm that day, some assailants attacked him, hacking him to death with sharp weapons in front of his seven-year-old son.

On May 17, the victim’s mother Aklima Begum filed a murder case with Pallabi police station against several people, including Awal, Sumon and Rocky.

On May 21, RAB arrested the former lawmaker Awal from Kishoreganj's Bhairab area, as the mastermind of the murder.

So far, the police have arrested a total of 14 people for their involvement with the murder.

Of them, nine are named as accused in the case while the other five were arrested during the investigation.

The arrestees are - MA Awal, Sumon Bepari, Md Titu, Md Dipu, Babu, Md Murad, Kalu Kibria, Mohammad Taher, Rocky Talukder, Nur Mohammad Hasan, Iqbal Sharif and Manzurul Hasan Babu.
