Five accused have been remanded for three days in three separate cases filed with the Patgram police station in connection with the brutal killing of Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidunnabi Jewel in Lalmonirhat.
Six others have been arrested in the incident.
On Thursday evening, Jewel, 50, was beaten to death by an angry mob near Burimari Central Jame Mosque at the Burimari Union Parishad premises of Patgram upazila, Lalmonirhat for allegedly desecrating the Quran.
The mob then took his body to Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway and set it on fire.
Lalmonirhat Court Police OC Mohammad Jahangir Alam said, the accused was placed on a three-day remand after a long hearing in the court of Lalmonirhat Senior Judicial Magistrate's Cognizance Court-3's Judge Mosammad Ferdousi Begum on Tuesday.
During the hearing of the remand application in the presence of the investigating officer of the case, the court police’s Crime Scene Investigator Musa Alam opposed the bail of the accused.
Lawyer Tipu sought bail on behalf of the accused.
However, for the investigation of the case the court did not grant bail to the accused and placed them in remand.
The investigating officer of the case Inspector Mahmudannabi confirmed the fact that the five accused are being remanded for three days each for bringing out the true story behind the incident.
He said the remanded accused are Ashraful Alam, 22, Bayezid, 24, Rafiq, 20, Masum Ali, 35, and Shafiqul Islam, 25.
Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Abida Sultana said: "We want to get to the bottom of the incident of burning the body to ashes after the brutal murder of Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel.
“For this, we need everyone's cooperation, as well as enough time. We are trying.”
People from all walks of life in Rangpur staged a protest at Payra Chattar in Rangpur city on Friday, demanding that the people involved in Jewel’s murder be soon identified, arrested, and brought to justice.
Speaking during the demonstration, the protesters said it was common knowledge in the area that Jewel used to pray five times in the mosque.
“He was a dear person to everyone and was wrongly accused [of hurting religious sentiments]. The real mystery will come out if the incident is investigated,” one of the protesters said, requesting anonymity.
