DMP chief: No bias in navy official assault case probe

Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy filed the case against four named accused, including Erfan Selim

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Shafiqul Islam on Tuesday said the investigation into the case over the assault of a navy officer will be conducted without any bias.

"No one will try to influence here. He [Erfan Selim] will be put on trial like other criminals," he said.

The DMP commissioner made the remarks during a program at the Tejgaon police station compound.

Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy filed the case with Dhanmondi police station against four named accused, including Erfan, and several unnamed others.

According to the case statement, a private car hit Lt Wasif's bike near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi around 7:45pm when he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.

After the accident, some people came out of the car and physically assaulted the navy officer and verbally abused his wife.

RAB arrested Erfan from his father’s residence at Devdas Lane in Swarighat, Old Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

A RAB mobile court on Monday sentenced Erfan, son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Selim, and his bodyguard Zahid to one-year in jail for possession of illegal walkie-talkies and liquor.

Detectives arrested another associate of Erfan Selim from Tangail district early Tuesday in the case filed over the assault on the navy official.

A team of Detective Branch of Police arrested Erfan’s associate AB Siddique, 45, from Tangail around 3:30am, said Walid Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

All named accused in the assault case are now behind bars. First to be arrested was driver Mizanur Rahman.
