A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained eight scammers, who have been faking their identities as detective police, from the Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.
“Acting on a tip-off, RAB men arrested them from Mirpur road in Sobhanbagh area of Dhanmondi early on Saturday,” RAB Senior Assistant Director Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune on Saturday morning.
During a press briefing at RAB media centre in Kawran Bazar, RAB 2 Commanding Officer Lt Col Iftekharul Mabud said the eight men have been identified.
They are Jewel Hossain alias Jewel Rana, 27, Md Hemayet Hossain alias BDR Hemayet alias Jasim Uddin, 51, Sheikh Nafiz alias Shohor Ali, 30, Md Faridul Islam Farid, 29, Md Morshedul Islam Khan, 39, Mohammad Ali, 32, Aiyub Khan, 25, and Shawpon Sarker, 36.
RAB recovered a foreign-made pistol, two rounds of bullets, one magazine, one machete, six used DB jackets, hand caps, a wireless (walkie-talkie) set and a micro-bus from their possession, he said.
In a primary interrogation, the detainees admitted to RAB that they have carried out hijackings and robberies in different areas of Dhaka for a long time, identifying themselves as DB men.
In addition, they would enter homes using the fake identities and rob everything, Lt Col Iftekharul Mabud said.
He said the detainees were in the micro-bus, preparing for a robbery at a Dhanmondi residence. At the time, a DB team conducted a drive and detained them.
Legal action has been taken against them, he added.
