A mentally challenged man reportedly murdered his father in Hongarchala village of Ghatail upazila in Tangail early Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Somed Ali, 50, father of the accused Hasmat Ali, 35.

Hasmat was mentally unstable as he has been an addict for about the past one and a half years. He was kept tied to a pole in the yard of their house due to this, according to police, the victim's family and locals.

On Saturday night, the pillar, with which Hasmat was tied to, got uprooted and he began beating his father with a stick entering his parents’ room. When Hasmat found a shovel near him, he brutally hacked his father to death with it. His mother was injured during the incident trying to protect her husband.

Locals speculated that Hasmat killed his father as he was agitated due to being kept tied to a pole.

Ghatail police station OC (Investigation) Saiful Islam said: "Police sent the body of the deceased for an autopsy. His wife filed a case in connection with the murder.”

"Police recovered a shovel, a bamboo stick from the incident spot," OC Saiful added.
