Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury is known to the international media as the local coordinator for Islamic State (IS) in Bangladesh but police say that he is a high-ranking member of a faction of the local militant group called the “NEW JMB.”
Tamim lived in Windsor, Canada from where he returned to Bangladesh on October 5, 2013.
Investigators said Tamim was hiding out in the northern districts of the country conducting a number of killing missions during that time.
Having gained sufficient confidence he finally executed both the Gulshan and Sholakia attacks, the investigators said.
One of the captured militants from the raid in Kallyanpur Rakibul Hasan alias Rigan confessed that a “Big Brother” used to come to their apartment to provide funds and give instructions.
Police say Tamim is one of these brothers and that they have filed case against him.
Monirul Islam, chief of counter-terrorism and transnational crime unit, said at the time of Kallyanpur raid that they had information that Tamim was in Dhaka during the raid and they think he is still in the country.
Inspector General of police AKM Shahidul Hoque said that Tamim is the mastermind behind the Gulshan attack.
Tamim was also accused of being a recruiter for the banned militant group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) an outfit allegedly responsible for the spate of killings that started two years ago.
The police had placed a bounty of Tk20 lakh on Tamim's head.
Tamim is the grandson of Abdul Majid Chowdhury of Sadimapur in Borogram Union, Sylhet.
Abdul Majid was the member of the infamous razakar committee known as the “Peace Committee” during the liberation war, locals alleged.
Tamim's father Shafiq Ahmed Chowdhury was a crew member in a ship.
He moved to Canada with his family after the liberation war.
Since Tamim's return to Bangladesh his precise location has remained unknown.
