OC among 11 charged with custodial death in Sylhet

The officer-in-charge, three sub-inspectors and a constable of Jaintapur police station, and six others have been made accused in a case filed over the death of an accused in police custody. Rokeya Begum, mother of the victim Nazrul Islam Babu, filed the case with Sylhet's Cognisance Court 1 on Thursday. Babu's wife Nasrin Fatema is among the accused. The plaintiff's lawyer Md Lala said that Babu had been picked up by the police on May 18 from his house in a case filed by Nasrin. “The next day, Babu was found inside the police station dead,” he said. OC Md Safiul Kabir was not available over the phone for comments. After the death, the OC termed the death a suicide. Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police Sugyan Chakma said that the autopsy report too showed suicide as the reason behind the death of Babu. So far, four policemen have been suspended over the incident. At least 78 people faced custodial deaths in 2016, according to rights group Ain O Salish Kendra. The number was 68 a year ago.
