A Chinese national has been detained with 5.56kg gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday.
The suspected smuggler has been identified as Ruan Jinfeng, 43.
Dhaka Airport Customs House Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the commissioner, the Chinese national arrived in Dhaka from Dubai on Emirates flight EK582 at 8am on the day. Acting on a tip off, customs authorities followed him from the boarding gate to the green channel, where he was interrogated and asked whether he had any goods to declare.
After the Chinese national denied that he was carrying anything out of the ordinary, customs ran his luggage through a scanner and the presence of metal was detected. When searching through the luggage, 48 gold bars were found hidden inside the battery of a rechargeable light.
A case has been filed against Ruan under the Customs Act, 1969 and Special Powers Act, 1974.
Earlier on March 13, two Chinese nationals were detained at Dhaka airport for smuggling gold.
