Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a female law intern on Saturday in connection with the murder of Notre Dame University Bangladesh student Yougen Hanasie Gonsalves.

Acting on a tipoff, a team from Rab 3 conducted a raid in the city’s North Mugda area on Saturday night and arrested Sakhina Begum Sabita, 26, a law intern at Dhaka Judge Court.

The body of Yougen, 22, a second year degree student of the university, was recovered by the police inside a flat in Sabujbagh on February 12.

During a briefing at Rab’s Karwan Bazar media centre on Sunday afternoon, Lt Col Emranul Hasan, commanding officer of Rab 3, told reporters Yougen became acquainted with Sabita in 2013 and became closer from 2017.

Sabita had gotten introduced with Advocate Jafar Ullah Rasel, 33, a practising lawyer of the Judge Court in May 2013 while she was pursuing her LLB degree from Stamford University, he said.

Later, both Yougen and Sabita started working at Poor People's Help Foundation, an NGO of run by Rasel, the Rab official said, adding that Sabita filed several cases against Rasel on various charges where Yougen was shown as key witness.

"Yougen used to demand money from Sabita for making him witness in the cases. If refused, he used to threaten her," he said quoting the law intern.

Finally, Sabita decided to kill Yougen to rid herself from the “blackmailing trauma”. She then rented a flat at Sabujbagh of which Yougen was supposed to share half of the rent.

On February 12, Sabita together with Yougen entered the flat, and left afterwards wearing a burka, after killing Yougen with a sharp weapon.

Rab identified Sabita after scrutinizing footage of a nearby CCTV.
