Police on Tuesday claimed that one of the masterminds of the Gulshan terror attack, Jahangir Alam, confessed to killing noted journalist Dipankar Chakrabarty in 2004.
According to police, Jahangir alias Rajib alias Gandhi confessed before the cognisance court of Sherpur in Bogra on Tuesday that he along with three other JMB members had killed Dipankar, then executive editor of local Daily Durjoy Bangla.
They killed him on the instruction of JMB leader Shayakh Abdul Awal, son-in-law of executed JMB chief Shayakh Abdur Rahman, because of his writings on the outfit’s activities.
Partho Sarothi, son of the slain journalist, said he had no faith in the police’s claim.
“I do not believe that 33-year-old New JMB militant Rajib killed my father 13 years ago. The police are trying to take credit of solving the murder mystery or to save the investigation officer,” he alleged.
Bogra Police Superintendent Md Asaduzzaman refuted the allegations. “It is not a matter of the plaintiff’s belief. It is the reality that Rajib and three other militants killed Dipankar,” he said.
Dipankar, also vice-president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, was hacked to death at Shannalpara of Sherpur when he was returning home from Bogra town after work on October 2, 2004.
At least nine investigation officers dealt with the case so far and the police submitted final reports in the sensational case four times.
Jahangir was arrested by the CTTC unit from Tangail in January. He was involved in most of the targeted attacks carried out by New JMB in the last couple of years, according to investigators.
