Chittagong Jailer Sohel Rana suspended, seven-day remand sought

On Friday, Bhairab Railway police arrested Sohel Rana, the jailer of Chittagong Central Jail, from a Bijoy Express train heading out from the port city in the afternoon

Bhairab Railway Police have asked for a seven-day remand for Sohel Rana – the jailer of Chittagong Central Jail who was detained with phensedyl and Tk44 lakh on Friday – after producing him before court.

Meanwhile, according to the Department of Prisons, Sohel was suspended following the incident.

Bangladesh Railway’s Bhairab police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Majid told the Dhaka Tribune: “Jailer Sohel Rana has two cases in his name – one under the Narcotics Act, the other under the Money Laundering Act. In order to question him regarding the narcotics found in his possession, police produced him before the Kishoreganj district court and asked for seven days of remand.

“The remand hearing will be held on Monday,” he added.

The cases were filed by Bhairab Railway police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Ashraf Uddin Bhuiyan. 

Meanwhile, Prison Department Director General (Administration) Abdullah Al Mamun told the Bangla Tribune: “We verbally announced Sohel’s suspension on Saturday(yesterday), and a written order will be given on Sunday(today). The cases against him are in progress, and Railway Police are assisting in the investigation.”

On Friday, Bhairab Railway police arrested Sohel Rana, the jailer of Chittagong Central Jail, from a Bijoy Express train heading out from the port city in the afternoon. At the time of the arrest, he had 12 bottles of phensedyl, Tk44.4 lakh cash, and over Tk1 crore in cheques in his possession.
